Be The Light Into Yourself

Be The Light Into Yourself

In this ever-changing world, we often tend to forget to recognise the changes in ourselves that are slowly occurring every day.

To be able to stand our ground firmly in the face of adversity it is imperative that we first form a deep connection with ourselves. To form a deep connection with ourselves we need to be aware of our thoughts, values, beliefs etc. and question everything. This is called Self-knowledge.

Imagine there is a dark cave in front of you. To walk inside and see what there is, you need a torch. Without the torch you might stumble and fall because you have nothing to guide you inside. That cave is your inner self and the torch will be your journey towards self-knowledge. You must become your own guiding light and you will discover many new dimensions to your personality. And who knows, you might end up discovering a treasure trove of new skills and ideas!

The following steps are a good departure point towards your journey of self-knowledge:

  • Recognise your feelings and reactions to certain situations.

  • Identify your core strengths, beliefs, values and challenges.

  • Meditate. It's a great way to clear your head of all the clutter and start each day afresh. (Caution: You may need guidance)

  • Write a journal. Putting our thoughts into words often helps us to know ourselves better.

  • Be versatile and agile with your plans. We need to be focused on our goal, keeping in mind that there is no single fixed path to achieve your objective.

Have you noticed that our medical training focuses on WHAT (what subjects to read, what skills to learn); HOW (How to learn?) WHY (Why is it important?) However, it rarely focuses on WHO? Who is the person studying medicine? Understanding the way, you think, behave, act; your values and beliefs are very important. Learning becomes WHOLE when we include self-knowledge. WHOLE learning helps us in becoming WHOLE Clinicians. Isn't that what we want?

We hold a mirror in front of us to observe our external appearance, physical features and to check for any flaws or imperfections. How about we hold a mirror inside of us and do the same? We are all good at taking selfies. We mostly take outer selfies. Have we ever thought of taking an inner selfie?
